Yoga is an easy physical exercise for seniors? You are making a big mistake! Depending on the type of exercise that you choose, practicing yoga allows you to burn up to 500 kcal within an hour. To compare - in an hour of skiing you burn 440 kcal, and in the case of cycling - 330! What is more, yoga also exercises your mind and boosts concentration. No wonder it has lost nothing of its appeal for so many years. Last year yoga was practiced by 300 million people worldwide. There must be something in it, wouldn’t you say?
If by practicing yoga you can burn five hundred calories per hour, does it mean that it is a sport for top-class sportspeople? Definitely not only! Among those who just start their yoga adventure there are also the elderly (the oldest yoga instructor noted in the Guinness Book of Records is a 98-year old Scotswoman Connie Dennison) who live a sedentary lifestyle as well as pregnant women (under their doctor’s supervision!). Everything depends on what intensity of exercise and asanas you select (asana is what you call a posture in yoga).

Other benefits of yoga? Firstly, you can practice it in winter and in summer, also at home. Secondly, no large financial outlays are needed to practice yoga. Thirdly, yoga is a synonym for health benefits. The practice increases endurance, immunity, flexibility and muscle strength. It increases your blood antioxidant levels (substances that offer a protective effect against cancer), while decreasing the cholesterol, glucose, sodium and triglycerides levels as well as reducing the risk of osteoporosis and arthritis.
What's the conclusion? You do not have to be a flexible gymnast to start your yoga adventure. Use the step by step method! A key to success is patience and taking regular exercise - in a group or on your own. The choice is yours. If you persuade your sister, mother or friend to practice, this will be yet another factor boosting your endorphin levels (the so called “happy hormone”) - not just the exercise, but also the time spent with a loved one. Get to work!
